Background

The client, an experienced site owner in the real estate affiliate space, came to Aphex Media during summer 2024 after facing prolonged stagnation in organic growth. The site had been running for years but was weighed down by technical SEO issues, a cluttered URL structure, thin and duplicate pages, and growing keyword cannibalization.

We were initially brought on board strictly for technical SEO, with clear instructions to avoid content creation or full redesign. Our job: fix the architecture, manage crawling efficiency, and clean up onsite SEO.


Phase 1: Technical & Onsite SEO Cleanup (July – Sept 2024)

Our first three months focused heavily on:

  • Removing bloated and redundant pages
  • Addressing crawl budget issues
  • Fixing internal linking inconsistencies
  • Consolidating keyword cannibalization
  • Revising sitemaps and robots.txt for precision control

By September 2024, we had successfully resolved most major technical issues. Rankings began to improve modestly, and organic traffic showed its first signs of recovery.


In November 2024, the client greenlit a link acquisition campaign. We implemented a light but targeted outreach campaign using our in-house InstaLinko platform:

  • Few high-authority, niche-relevant backlinks per month
  • Focused exclusively on commercial intent and money pages

This helped boost topical authority and domain trust, giving the site a competitive edge in the micro-niche landscape.


Turning Point: Engagement Crisis & UX Shift (Dec 2024)

Despite growing rankings and better crawl health, we noticed a problem in GA4:

  • ❌ Low Average Engagement Time
  • ❌ Bounce rate rising, especially on high-priority pages

It became clear: technical SEO alone wasn’t enough.

We consulted the client and proposed a subtle redesign focused purely on UX and conversion optimization. Key changes:

  • Modernized the page layout and styling for trustworthiness
  • Added social proof elements (testimonials, trust badges)
  • Introduced “Key Summaries” at the top of each money page
  • Integrated 5–10 step interactive quizzes tailored to each offer

These changes encouraged users to:

  • Get key info fast (no need to scroll/read long-form content)
  • Engage with the quiz funnel to discover personalized solutions

Phase 3: UX-Driven SEO Growth (Jan – March 2025)

With both structural fixes and engagement elements in place, we saw:

  • Bounce rate drop to nearly negligible levels
  • Avg. engagement time increase dramatically
  • Steady gains in daily traffic, clicks, and impressions

The quiz + summary format not only helped users stay longer, but also convert better. The client confirmed the conversion rate from traffic to leads had improved significantly.

🎓 Lessons Learned

  • Technical SEO can unlock crawlability and indexation, but won’t improve user experience by itself
  • High bounce rate and low engagement are conversion killers
  • Summaries at the top of the page align perfectly with how users scan content
  • Interactive quizzes increase time-on-site and funnel engagement
  • Subtle, trust-oriented UX changes can compound SEO gains over time
